Keeping a Diary in English

Our teacher asks us to keep a diary in English. I 31 doing so because I think keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to 32 our English writing ability.

Compared with 33 forms of writing, it is shorter and 34 less time. It can help us to 35 the habit of thinking in English. 36 we persist in(坚持) this practice, gradually we’ll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, 37 can use the important phrases and sentences we’ve 38 in or out of English classes to describe our 39 , and this way we can master and use freely 40 we’ve learned, which will do good 41 us in English learning. But 42 we certainly run up against many difficulties. In the first place, it often happens that we have 43 finding proper words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there 44 many idiomatic (惯用的) ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard 45 us to put them into English properly.

As far as I am concerned, my suggestion is that we 46 always have a notebook and a

Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever 47 beats(难倒) us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then look it up in our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for 48 , if necessary.

In short, I believe that it is of 49 use to keep a diary in English for the development of our 50 skills. 31. A. enjoy 32. A. get 33. A. other 34. A. spends 35. A. give up 36. A. If 37. A. they

阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并将答案填入答题卡。

A

When I was at university, I studied very hard. But a lot of my friends did very little work. Some did just enough to pass exams. Others didn't do quite enough. Fred Baines was one of them. He spent more time drinking in the Students' Union than working in the library.

Once, at the end of the term, we had to take an important test in chemistry. The test had a hundred questions. Beside each question, we had to write \"True\" or \"False\". While I was studying in my room the night before the test, Fred was watching television. Fred usually worried a lot the night before a test. But on that night he looked perfectly calm. Then he told me of his plan.

\"It's very simple. There are a hundred questions and I have to get fifty correct to pass the test.

I'll take a coin into the examination room. I haven't studied a chemistry book for months, so I'll just toss the coin. That way, I'm sure I'll get half the questions right.\"

The next day Fred came cheerfully into the examination room. He sat tossing a coin for half an hour as he marked down his answers. Then he left, half an hour before the rest of us.

The next day, he saw the chemistry professor in the corridor .

\"Oh, good,\" he said. \"Have you got the result of the test? What mark did I get?\" The professor looked at him and smiled. \"Ah, it's you, Baines. Just a minute.\"

Then he reached into his pocket and took out a coin. He threw it into the air, caught it in his hand and looked at it.

\"I'm terribly sorry, Baines,\" he said, \"you failed.\"

51. Fred Baines _______.

A. spent quite some time working in the Students' Union B. worked hard at his lessons but he failed again and again C. often failed his tests

A. he was already well prepared for it

B. he didn't think the test was so important for him C. someone had promised to help him out

D. he believed he had found out a way to pass the test without difficulty 53. The professor told Baines the result of the test by tossing a coin because _______.

A. he wanted to teach Baines a lesson B. he couldn't remember the mark Baines got

C. he wouldn't hurt Baines' feeling by telling him the tru D. he hadn't marked all the papers yet

B Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything from school. A teacher,no matter how much he knows can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.

It is always more important to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula(公式). It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in maths. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein,Newton and Galileo didn’t get everything from school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments.

Above all, they knew how to use their brains.

54. The subject which is not spoken of in the article is _____ A. maths

B. history

C. physiology(生理学) D. physics

55. The teacher’s job is to teach ___________. A. everything the students want to know B. the students everything that they know C. the students some facts of formulas D. the students how to learn

56.Einstein, Newton and Galileo did so many things for mankind because_____. A. they learned a lot at school

B. they knew how to learn new things outside class by themselves

C. they were so useful

D. they went to college and learned form professors 57. Who does the article say didn’t waste a single moment? A. Great people

B. Persons who work as teachers C. The great scientist-Newton D. Great scientists

58. From the passage we know that if we want to be successful, we should________ . A. Only learn more at school B. needn’t go to school C. Only learn science subjects

D. learn to learn at school and learn more outside school

C Close your eyes and imagine you are living in the next two centuries or more. You’ll be living in a world filled with smart robots, which will be helping you to take care of your children, or your elderly parents in your home. You’ll live much longer thanks to the medicine made by genetic(基因的) science. And mankind may be going farther in space than ever before---you will be living on the moon or Mars.

How should we view the changes that wait for us in the future? Should we be optimistic about the years ahead, or worried about what the future holds? Some scientists and experts are having a discussion about how technology, science and society will develop in the future.

“I’m looking forward to the day when more technology will come to my life.” Says Hohn Searle, a professor at the University of California Berkeley Philosophy, “because I think further research in such areas as genetics, physics, chemitry and medicine will help us to overcome poverty(贫穷), improve health, and make life longer.”

Hugh Herr, at MIT’s Biomechatronecs Group, considers very powerful weapons (武器) as concern(担心) over the future. Another is the growing role of technology in our lives. “Machines taking over what humans do is not a good thing,” Herr says.

That is a similar concern shared by Danisla Cerqui, a social and cultural scientist. “I am afraid

that the long-term future we are building will have no space left for human beings,” says Cerqui. “ The main values of our society are related to information that must progress as quickly as possible, and computers are much better than humans in these tasks.” 59. The first paragraph mainly tells us _____.

A. how science will develop in the next two centuries B. how people will live in a modern society C. what life would be like in the future D. what computers will bring to our society

60. What is John Searle’s attitude towards the future of technology? A. Worried. B. Optimistic. C. Uncertain

D. Disappointed

61. The underlined word “That” in the last paragraph refers to ___. A. the poverty problem in the future B. machines taking over what humans do C. the technology of weapons D. the health problem of humans

62. What would be the best title for the passage? A. The future ---full of hope or concern? B. Great changes will take place in the future C. The relationship between technology and humans D. The role of robots and computers in the future

D Catch of a Lifetime

He was 11 years old and went fishing every chance he got from the dock at his family’s cabin on an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.

On the day before the bass season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch (鲈鱼) with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(鱼饵) and practiced casting. The lure struck the water and caused colored ripples in the sunset, then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake.

When his pea pole(鱼竿) doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. His father watched with admiration as the boy skillfully worked the fish alongside the dock.

Finally, he very gingerly lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass. The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, gills playing back and forth in the moonlight. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M.-- two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy.

“You’ll have to put it back, son,” he said. “Dad!” cried the boy.

“There will be other fish,” said his father. “Not as big as this one,” cried the boy.

He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could tell by the clarity(清楚) of his father’s voice that the decision was not negotiable. He slowly worked the hook out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water.

The creature swished its powerful body and disappeared. The boy suspected that he would never again see such a great fish.

That was 34 years ago. Today, the boy is a successful architect in New York City. His father’s cabin is still there on the island in the middle of the lake. He takes his own son and daughters fishing from the same dock.

And he was right. He has never again caught such a magnificent fish as the one he landed that night long ago. But he does see that same fish-again and again-every time he comes up against a question of ethics (道德规范).

63. Why did the father ask his son to put the perch back? A. Because the father disliked the perch. B. Because the father was afraid of being fined C. Because the ethics must be obeyed.

D. Because the son was more experienced in fishing than his father. 64.What’s the meaning of the underlined word? A. 可协商的

B. 可接受的

C. 可理解的 D. 可改变的

65. When does the architect (the father’s son) think of that perch put back? A. When he takes his own and son and daughters fishing from the same dock.

B. When he builds many famous buildings. C. When he pays a visit to his old father. D. When he faces some problems about ethics.

66. Which word can not be used to describe the boy’s father? A.honest B.noble-minded C.caring

E Owning a smartphone may not be as smart as you think. They may let you surf the Internet, listen to music and snap photos wherever you are... but they also turn you into a workaholic, it seems. A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing, all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day.

Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they are able to respond to emails on their mobiles. The study by technology retailer Pixmania, reveals the average UK working day is between nine and ten hours, but a further two hours is spent responding to or sending work emails,or making work calls.Almost one in ten admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails. Some workers confess they are on call almost 24 hours a day, with nine out of ten saying they take work emails and calls outside their normal working hours.Nearly two-thirds say they often check work emails just before they go to bed and as soon as they wake up, while over a third have replied to one in the middle of the night.

Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said:“The ability to access literally millions of apps, keep in contact via social networks and take photos and video as well as text and call has made smartphones valuable for many people. However, there are drawbacks. Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and smartphones mean that people literally cannot get away from work. The more constantly in contact we become, the more is expected of us in a work capacity.”

(Written by Brain Salter, a journalist of China Daily.)

67. The text is probably taken from . A. a newspaper C. a scientific report

B. a financial report D. a literary journal

D.generous

68.The underlined word “drawbacks” in the last paragraph probably means . A. disadvantages B. advantages C. mistakes D. features 69. Ghadi may agree that .

A. employees are supposed to be on call 24 hours a day B. the ability to access many apps made smartphones worthless C. people literally cannot get away from work without smartphones D. smartphones might turn a person into a workaholic 70. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Britons work art additional 460 hours a year on average. B. Smartphones are becoming valuable for many people. C. Smartphones are lengthening working hours.

D. Smartphones are more beneficial to our life than we think.
